THE FUTURE OF HARVESTING ENERGY
The brief was to imagine Westminster University in 2060, based on a utopian/destopian future scenario. This project sees an economic shift whereby money no longer exists and instead, humans trade in energy. 29 Marylebone Road (currently owned by Westminster University) is a facility for students to pay their university fees through the collection of kinetic energy.
Movement produces kinetic energy, which can be converted into power. Today, devices exist to transform human kinetic energy into electricity, such as hand-cranked radios, computers and flashlights. But what if this energy could be collected and stored? Consider, whether full-body suits can be built to collect, harvest and trade the kinetic energy produced by humans.
Featuring a rotating bark climbing wall surrounded by weight pods and a ‘rash’ of cogs with a hydro-collection swimming pool and lift at its core, this facility provides options for students to harvest kinetic energy.
Designs taken from previous projects have also been expanded and incorporated, such as the ‘Sleep Station’ and ‘Health Pods’.
